BRISLA attends Deepavali Festival of Light celebration at the High Commission of Sri Lanka in London

BriSLA Chairman Dr Zimar Sivardeen was honoured to join members of the Sri Lankan community and staff members of the Sri Lanka Mission to celebrate Deepavali “Festival of Light” at the High Commission of Sri Lanka in London.

A significant day on the Hindu calendar, Deepavali is widely celebrated amongst the Hindu community around the world and hosting this event is a tradition at the High Commission in London.

The evening began with religious rituals of the blessing and Pooja, conducted by Sivasiri Ramanatha Kurukkal. While explaining the meaning of Deepavali, Sivasiri Ramanatha Kurukkal noted the value of celebrating religious and cultural festivals with the members of different faiths. “This leads to greater unity within the communities,” he said. He commended the High Commission for marking the occasion, and hoped that Deepavali celebrations will continue to be held in the years to come.

Acting High Commissioner Mrs. Chamari Rodrigo welcomed the members of the Sri Lankan community to the High Commission and wished everyone a Happy Deepavali. She noted that it was most appropriate that the Festival of Light is being celebrated today when Sri Lankans enjoy peace and harmony under the leadership of His Excellency President Mahinda Rajapaksa who brought an end to 30 years of brutal terrorism. “Sri Lanka has ushered in a new era, going beyond reconstruction and reintegration by establishing a domestic mechanism to address issues of accountability which has been strengthened by international expertise,” she added.
